When we practice controlled breathing using the 4-7-8 technique, our body signals the release of neurohormones, which inhibit the production of adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine. This behavior triggers a physical relaxation response.

The 4-7-8 technique can be done as a formal practice or informally wherever you may be. It can relieve stress or help bring you back into the present moment. It's simple. Take a deep breath in for 4 counts, hold for 7 and breathe out for 8.
