Living in the moment right now can be depressing.
Every day, multiple times a day, we are inundated with bad news—mass shootings, the polarization of politics, climate change… the list goes on. It’s totally normal to feel despondent; add any upheaval in your personal life and the world can feel overwhelming. It’s no wonder many of us can’t get past all the headlines. In fact, experts have proven that human beings have what is called a negativity bias, which explains why it’s easier to focus on the negative versus the positive.
While it can be difficult to do, there are enormous benefits in thinking positively about your future. Shifting your focus and thinking optimistically about what’s ahead can make you feel better right now! Imagine what you want your future to look like. How do you want to feel? Thinking about what could be next can bring enthusiasm and excitement to your life—and will ultimately give you something to look forward to!
Technique of the week: Think about and write down two things that happened in the past—things that were entirely unplanned and unexpected—that ended up making a positive impact in your life. Start today and visualize your positive future. Focus on one thing that will help you get there… and do it! What are you waiting for?
